Longevity is better achieved by avoiding cancer
Article: http://www.simcoe.com/article/37303

Gist: Prevent cancer, live longer.  Seems like a no brainer....

Interesting tidbit: Cancer has surpassed cardiovascular disease as Canada's number one killer.

Every time I think about cancer: I think about what a Macroevolution professor (Kevin J. Peterson) once said.  Ok, not verbatim, but it was something about how evolution looks at any level we might consider - populations, people, cells.  At the cellular level, one cell outcompeting other cells --> cancer.  One species outcompeting other species --> global cancer?  Cheery thought.

He also said something about: this being why cancer was so difficult to beat, because it's effectively the result of evolution and natural selection at a cellular level.

That said: there are surely things that can be done to prevent cancer in an individual.

Among which are: "... not smoking, getting plenty of exercise and eating a healthy diet."  These seem to be some pretty recurrent themes in what I talk about.  I wonder if I have some sort of obsession....

Speaking of Evolution, this reminded me of an interesting article in the globe and mail a short while back talking about vitamin D and its benefits as an anti-carcinogenic compund. It seems that vitamin D deficiencies in temperate climates where sunshine is generally less intense.

Seems like we spent millions of years evolving in the sunshine. All of a sudden deciding to live indoors covered in clothes may not be a great evolutionary strategy.

Nice Post btw,

Mitch
