Gist: Sanjay makes some sweeping comments about supplementing, chasing life, and practical immortality.
Supplementing: Sanjay notes perceptively that the mentality
behind supplementing has long been "Won't hurt, might help - why
not?" As noted many times, this is far from true. Health is
balance. Never forget that health is balance.
Chasing life: As noted in the article, what causes most people
to chase life is a brush with death. Sounds trite, but seriously
- why wait until then? Probably because we're procrastinators by
nature. Even our own health can be dealt with "later", and it's a
brush with death, a glimpse of an approaching deadline, that makes us
double our efforts. For Sanjay, it was the birth of his
daughter. For me, it was a 10:24 mile way back in freshman year
of high school. Find your reason.
Practical immortality: You might be wondering why I talk about
Sanjay Gupta so much. It's because he says a lot of the same
things I say - or conversely, that I say a lot of the things he
says.
Ahem.
Q: Is immortality possible?
A: I think it's a great question and you know people immediately become dubious when you start talking about immortality.
I
do think we are going to get to a state of practical immortality, which
means we are not going to live forever, but we are going to greatly
increase life span.
In other words, talking about what Sanjay says validates what I say - and I like to think I'm right.
